Allison E. Fisher was 25 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she was 28 when she lost her fight to survive the disease.
The National Cancer Institute estimates that one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer during her lifetime, based on cancer occurrences from 1997 through 1999.
Although the Institutes data shows that the odds of being diagnosed with breast cancer increase with age, young women who are in their 20s and 30s should be aware that learning about breast cancer and following an early detection program are two very important steps to take in protecting your health.
The Allison E. Fisher Memorial Fund uses its scholarships and awards programs to raise awareness about breast cancer. Recipients, many of whom are aspiring journalists, are encouraged to use their skills to obtain information about breast cancer and to share it with others. From time to time, their articles will be posted on this web site. In addition, the Fund works with partners from the health field, churches and other organizations that focus on awareness, action and advocacy of breast health. It has chosen the Maryland members of The Young Survival Coalition as its primary recipient of support.
