Body & Soul is a wellness program specifically developed for African American churches to encourage their members to eat 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables every day to reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases. Developed by the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the program was tested in African American churches in North Carolina and at Emory University.
Through use of scripture and modeling behavior, the pastor of the church helps members to see the value of a healthy life-style, for their physical and spiritual well-being.
At St. Stephens A.M.E. church in Essex, MD, the culinary ministry has resolved to serve fruits and vegetables at all functions. With funding from Body & Soul partners, the health ministry conducts activities such as workshops, taste tests and monthly fruit distributions.
Allison’s Fund is a Body & Soul partner at St. Stephens A.M.E. church.
